Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans For us, social value isn't a trendy buzzword; it's the foundational principle that shapes everything we do. It's about recognizing that our work has a ripple effect, impacting not just the products we create, but the lives of our incredible team and the broader community we're a part of, right here in Bengaluru. So, what does this look like on the ground, day in and day out? It starts with our amazing team of artisans. We've consciously built an inclusive environment where talent from all walks of life is not only welcomed but celebrated. This isn't just about ticking boxes; it's about recognizing the unique skills and perspectives that each individual brings to the table. Creating Social Value Through Our Team: Fair Wages and Dignified Work: For us, it's non-negotiable. We believe in providing fair compensation and respectful working conditions that empower our artisans and enable them to build secure futures for themselves and their families. This is the bedrock of the social value we create. Investing in Growth and Skills: Our studio isn't just a place of production; it's a space for learning and development. We actively invest in training our artisans, helping them hone their existing skills and acquire new ones. This not only enhances their craftsmanship but also increases their long-term employability and personal growth. Fostering a Sense of Belonging: We've intentionally cultivated a supportive and collaborative atmosphere within our studio. It's a place where artisans feel valued, respected, and connected. This strong internal community fosters trust and allows for the sharing of knowledge and mutual support – creating social value from within. Importantly, the fair earnings our artisans receive directly contribute to a greater sense of inclusion and stability within their own homes. Their ability to provide for their families and invest in their future strengthens their standing and voice within their households, fostering a more equitable and secure environment at home. This positive impact at the family level radiates outwards, further enriching our community. Breaking Down Barriers, Building Bridges: By actively seeking out and employing individuals from diverse backgrounds, we're contributing to a more inclusive society right here in Bangalore. Our studio becomes a microcosm of the kind of interconnected community we envision. Essentially, at Diya Innovations, the creation of social value isn't an afterthought; it's woven into the very fabric of our operations. It begins with how we treat our team, the opportunities we provide, and the inclusive culture we nurture within our Bangalore studio. We believe that by prioritizing the well-being and empowerment of our artisans, we're laying the strongest foundation for positive impact that extends far beyond the beautiful products they create. And that's just the beginning of the story... because, as we'll explore, you, our customers, become crucial partners in amplifying Read Full Testimonial

Celebrating our ace candle maker and his mother!

By |2025-05-22T13:35:58+00:00May 22nd, 2025|Blog|

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans Bhagyaraj joined the founding team of Diya Innovations in 2013. His strength is his ability to follow instructions and complete tasks with perfection. Bhagya is one of the veterans of the candle making team and he knows every step of the process.  Bhagya is the keeper of the moulds, the preparer of the wicks, the melter of the wax and pour-er of the fragrant liquid into the candle holders - in short, an expert in every step of the process. He can trouble shoot thanks to years of candle making experience. His contribution to the busy candle unit is undeniably significant!  Bhagya joined Diya Foundation, about 17 years ago and in 2013, joined the production studio. In addition to his skills at candle making, he loves art and craft. He delights in drawing and painting and learning to work with new art media. He works hard to win the approval of his peers and team lead and aims to never disappoint…and he never does. The youngest of 3 siblings, Bhagya’s mother is his biggest strength, advocate and champion! Her unwavering love is like the motherly love one sees so often among mothers of children with disabilities - they see beyond challenges, celebrate every tiny victory, and fuel an unyielding advocacy for their child. Bhagya’s mother too navigates complex systems, fights for understanding, and creates worlds of possibility where others might see limitations.  Widowed early, she was left to bring up 3 young ones, two of whom were born with intellectual disabilities and severe health challenges. She toiled relentlessly as a cook for many years in the home of a family that helped her to feed, clothe and give the best education possible and early intervention to her children. The challenges life has thrown her over the years has left her unfazed. A strong faith, unwavering love and a positive attitude keep her going! As we celebrate mothers this month of May, here’s a loud shout out to one of the strongest mothers we know

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans Mallige, May and the Magic of JasmineThe air in Bengaluru this May, as it has for countless years, carries a special kind of magic. It's a sweetness that's both delicate and intoxicating, a fragrance that weaves its way through both bustling local markets and quiet home gardens alike. This is the unmistakable perfume of Mallige, our beloved Jasmine, a flower so deeply entwined with the spirit of this city, particularly during the vibrant wedding season that blossoms alongside it in May. For a Bengaluru bride in this wedding season, Mallige isn't just a flower; it's an essential adornment. Imagine the scene: the soft glow of the wedding mandap, the vibrant hues of silk sarees, and amidst it all, the bride, her hair adorned with strings upon strings of pristine white jasmine buds and blossoms. Each tiny flower, perfectly formed and intensely fragrant, adds an ethereal beauty to her presence. The scent that emanates is a subtle yet powerful statement – of purity, of auspicious beginnings, and of a deep connection to tradition. The delicate blooms symbolize beauty, serenity, and good fortune for the journey ahead. A touch of Bengaluru for your special day. Give your guests a lasting memory of your celebration with our fragrant soy wax candle. The delicate, intoxicating scent of jasmine will transport them back to the joy of your wedding, long after the day is done. The allure of Mallige extends far beyond the wedding mandap of Bengaluru. This unassuming white flower, with its seemingly simple form, holds a fragrance so rich and complex that it has captivated perfumers for centuries. Its essence, extracted with painstaking care, forms the heart of some of the world's most iconic and luxurious perfumes. Inspired by this very magic, our collection of scented soy candles and cupboard fragrance tablets seeks to capture the essence of jasmine. We aim to bring that same sense of delicate richness, that whisper of Bangalore's May air, into your homes and everyday moments. Imagine lighting our "Blossom Freshness" hand poured soy wax candle in a jar, its gentle fragrance filling your space with the same serene beauty that adorns a bride on her special day. Or placing our Blossom Freshness fragrance tablet in your cupboard, allowing the subtle sweetness to infuse your clothes with a touch of Bangalore's fragrant soul. This fragrance tablet, inspired by the iconic jasmine of Bengaluru weddings, is the perfect way to thank your guests and fill their homes with the auspicious scent of new beginnings.” This May, as the city celebrates new beginnings and the air is thick with the perfume of Mallige, we invite you to embrace this timeless fragrance. Whether it's the memory of a beautiful bride, the inspiration for a world-renowned perfume, or the simple joy of its delicate sweetness, Mallige holds a special place in our Read Full Testimonial

Sensory Sensitivities and Autism: A Guide for Creating Comfortable Environments

By |2025-04-24T10:27:21+00:00April 24th, 2025|Blog|

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans “The brain locates, sorts and orders sensations, somewhat like the way a traffic light directs moving cars. When sensations flow in a well organised or integrated manner, the brain uses those sensations to form perceptions, behaviours and learning. When the flow of sensations is disorganized, life can be like a rush-hour traffic jam.” — Adapted from Jane Ayres, OT For many individuals with autism, the world can be a sensory rollercoaster. Everyday experiences that others take for granted—the hum of fluorescent lights, the scratch of a clothing tag, the cacophony of a busy cafeteria—can be overwhelming and distressing. This is due to sensory processing differences, a common characteristic of autism. Understanding these sensitivities is essential for creating comfortable and supportive environments at home, school, and work. To identify possible sensory impacts on behaviour, we need to carefully observe what is happening for that individual. Is there …. Too little stimulation (Hyposensitivity): May feel bored, under stimulated, under aroused. When feeling underwhelmed, the person may end up seeking stimulation or attention. Behaviours to look out for -  difficulty perceiving visual details or depth,  seeking out intense tactile stimulation or having a high pain threshold,  seeking out intense movement or having difficulty with coordination. Just enough: The person may present as happy, content and able to engage in activities without difficulty. Too much stimulation (Hypersensitivity): May feel overwhelmed, overstimulated or overloaded. The person may eliminate or minimise sensory overload by avoiding. They may react with a ‘Fight’ response (responding with anger, irritability), or ‘Flight’ (responding with avoidance, fear or withdrawal) or ‘Freeze’ response (simply shutting down). Behaviours that tell you this -  sounds may be perceived as excessively loud or painful, bright lights, flickering screens, or visual clutter can be overwhelming,  certain textures, clothing fabrics, or physical touch can be irritating or painful,  motion sickness or discomfort with movement -like rides in theme parks,  strong odors or flavors can be intensely unpleasant How Can We Create Sensory-Friendly Spaces: Some Practical Tips At Home: Minimize Auditory Overload: Use sound-absorbing materials like rugs, curtains, and soft furnishings. Provide noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. Create a quiet space for relaxation. Control Visual Stimuli: Use soft, warm lighting instead of harsh fluorescent lights. Minimize visual clutter and organize belongings. Use blackout curtains to block out light. Address Tactile Sensitivities: Choose comfortable, seamless clothing made from soft fabrics. Provide weighted blankets or vests for calming tactile input. Offer sensory toys or fidget tools. Smell and Taste: Use unscented cleaning products. Offer foods with mild flavors. Be mindful of strong perfumes or colognes. Vestibular and Proprioceptive: Provide opportunities for movement, such as swings or rocking chairs. Offer heavy work activities, such as carrying weighted objects. At School: Create a Sensory-Friendly Classroom: Designate a quiet corner or calming area. Provide sensory tools and fidget toys. Allow for flexible seating options. Use visual Read Full Testimonial

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans In today's world, the gentle hum of "sustainability" has grown into a resounding call to action. Whether you're a corporation seeking impactful client gifts, an individual celebrating a loved one, or a planner orchestrating a memorable event or wedding, the desire to tread lightly on our planet resonates deeply. At Diya Innovations we understand this sentiment intimately. Its not just a trend for us, its the very foundation upon which we build our creations. More than just crafting beautiful products we are committed to the core principal of reuse, reduce and recycle. This philosophy isnt an after thought, its woven into every step of our design and production process. We believe gifting can be both meaningful and mindful, allowing you and your recipients to contribute to a more sustainable future, one thoughtful gesture at a time. Breathing New Life into Leftovers: The Art of Reuse Imagine the countless end pieces of cloth, the remnants from garment manufacturers that often find their way to landfills. At Diya Innovations, we see potential where others see waste. Our skilled artisans meticulously transform these discarded "thaans" into vibrant and functional bags and pouches. Each piece carries a story of resourcefulness, a testament to the beauty of giving materials a second life. By choosing these handcrafted items, you're not just offering a unique gift; you're actively participating in reducing textile waste and supporting mindful consumption. Melting Down Waste, Igniting New Light: The Magic of Recycle The warm glow of a candle can create ambiance and evoke memories. But what happens to the leftover wax? At Diya Innovations, we see it as an opportunity. We collect and carefully remelt discarded wax, infusing it with new colors and fragrances to create fresh, beautiful candles. This simple yet effective recycling process minimizes waste and transforms something seemingly insignificant into a source of light and joy. When you gift our recycled candles, you're sharing a sustainable source of comfort and contributing to a circular economy. Steering Clear of the Conventional: Our Commitment to Avoiding Plastic The environmental impact of plastic is a global concern, and we are actively working to minimize its presence in our products and packaging. We constantly explore and embrace alternative materials, including innovative options derived from recycled garment waste. Our aim is to offer you sustainable gifting solutions that don't compromise on quality or aesthetics, allowing you to make a conscious choice for the planet. Beyond Packaging: Keepsakes Designed to Last We understand the frustration of receiving beautifully packaged gifts only to discard the packaging moments later. That's why our wooden products are designed with a dual purpose. While they may initially serve as elegant packaging, their inherent beauty and functionality ensure they become cherished keepsakes. These aren't items destined for the bin; they are designed to be used, displayed, and treasured for years to Read Full Testimonial

Understanding Down Syndrome: More than just an Extra Chromosome

By |2025-03-18T05:00:50+00:00March 18th, 2025|Blog|

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans Down syndrome. You've likely heard the term, but do you truly understand what it means? Beyond the basic facts, there's a story of resilience, strength, and the unique beauty that comes with a different genetic makeup. Let's delve deeper and shed some light on this fascinating condition. What is Down Syndrome? Think of a recipe for a cake. Usually, you follow the exact measurements for each ingredient. But with Down syndrome, it's like adding an extra pinch of one ingredient to the recipe. It might change the texture and flavour slightly, but it can still be a delicious cake. Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material, like that extra pinch of ingredient, leads to the characteristic features and developmental differences associated with the condition. Named after Dr. John Langdon Down, who first described it in 1866, Down syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in 700 births worldwide. While the exact cause of the extra chromosome is still unknown, it is primarily due to a random error in cell division called nondisjunction. Maternal age is a known factor that increases the likelihood. The Genetic Twist: Trisomy 21 and Beyond The most common type, Trisomy 21, accounts for 95% of cases. Here, every cell in the body has that extra copy of chromosome 21. But there's more to the story. Mosaic Down Syndrome is a rarer form where only some cells have the extra chromosome. This often leads to milder characteristics as not all cells are affected. Finally, Translocation Down Syndrome occurs when a part of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome. While it's a smaller percentage of cases, it's significant because it can be inherited. A parent can be a carrier of a balanced translocation, meaning they have the rearranged genetic material but no extra chromosome 21, and thus no features of Down syndrome. Beyond the Physical: Celebrating Individuality We often focus on the physical characteristics – the flattened facial profile, the upward slant of the eyes, the single palmar crease. While these are common, it's crucial to remember that individuals with Down syndrome are just that: individuals. They are as diverse as anyone else, with their own unique personalities, talents, and dreams. Bhuvana : Personality: Nurturing: To emphasize her warm, loving, and caring nature. Talent: Precision: Points to her accuracy and attention to detail in her work. Dreams: Connection: Her love for prayer and her empathetic nature, hinting at a dream of deep spiritual connection and meaningful relationships. Prithvi Babu: Dancer, Artist, Bag and box maker The Journey of Development: Developmentally, individuals with Down syndrome may learn at a different pace. Intellectual development may vary, ranging from mild to moderate. Speech and language development may be delayed, and motor skills might take longer to master. Read Full Testimonial

Chocolyn : A Chocolate brand built in the early 2000s and still going strong

By |2025-03-18T04:55:05+00:00March 18th, 2025|Blog|

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans Carolyn passed away in 2007. In her memory, the ‘Chocolyn’ Chocolate Project was established at Diya, funded by the donations that her family sought from friends and family who attended her funeral. By 2013, it grew into one of the business units of the production studio at Diya Innovations. How Chocolyn came to be? Carolyn, one of Diya Foundation’s first three students, graced the unit with the most beautiful, shy smile during her days there in the early 2000s. Adorned in carefully coordinated attire and accessories, she would eagerly await the auto, anticipating the day’s adventures. Cherished memories of Carolyn revolve around her love for food and sweets. On her own birthday, when asked which Diya product she’d like as a gift, she’d politely decline every suggestion. But her entire face would light up with joy at the mere mention of a Cadbury chocolate. Carolyn’s diligence shone through her work. She excelled at sanding the recycled rolls, transforming them into creative pen stands. She approached each responsibility with enthusiasm and found joy in her craft. Carolyn passed away in 2007. In her memory, the ‘Chocolyn’ Chocolate Project was established at Diya, funded by the donations that her family sought from friends and family who attended her funeral. From Simple to Chic: The Embroidery Effect

By |2025-02-23T07:26:29+00:00February 23rd, 2025|Blog|

Beyond the Chromosome: Celebrating the Remarkable Gifts of Our Down Syndrome Artisans We would like to introduce you to two very important members of our team who elevate what we offer our clients, through their incredible embroidery skills. Hand embroidery possesses an unequalled charm. A simple flower and stem in the corner of a hanky lifts the piece from ordinary to delicately beautiful. The sometimes uneven running stitch or 'kantha' stitch can elevate absolutely any fabric from 0 to a 100 on a simple-chic scale. It’s this transformative power we celebrate ! Meet Mouly apprentice at a vintage car service station by day, master  embroiderer by night Mouly, is a tall, lanky young man, with a hearing and speech impairment. But nothing stops him from creating art masterpieces. He draws, paints and embroiders with passion. His day job is apprenticing at a vintage car service station, where he helps repair some of Bangalore’s beautiful vintage cars that come in for routine repairs. We outsource embroidery onto our ‘lavender bags’ to him, whenever a wedding giveaway order comes in. He works with precision and speed and ensures a delighted client. Ayesha loves the rigour and monotony of the kantha stitch makes magic by running the stitch over neatly drawn patterns Ayesha's embroidery skills were discovered more recently. A chance admittance to an embroidery learning session at Diya Foundation, in between her candle making day, revealed a latent talent. She loved the rigour and monotony of the kantha stitch and soon discovered she could make magic by running the stitch over neatly drawn patterns. She was taught the chain stitch and satin stitch and fell in love with those  too, creating pretty floral patches. She'd carry her work home, and soon there were worried calls from her mother about her sleeping only after a design was complete. The joy and enthusiasm with which she works on her patches is infectious and she has her colleagues Rekha and Bhuvana wanting in. When they have a free afternoon, she patiently teaches them Kantha and watching that is a treat! Do visit us at Diya Innovations, to meet the team and see the products crafted by them. Your patronage encourages our artisans to learn more and do better! It also helps them earn better and aspire to better futures.
