THOUGHTFUL WORKPLACE DESIGN – SPOTLIGHT – Rohan Alexander
In this month’s spotlight, we sit down with Rohan and his mother Rosy to learn how thoughtful design transforms his daily experience.
Rohan is a young man with an intellectual disability and is on the autism spectrum. His unique perspective helps us see that true inclusion isn't just about building ramps—it's about creating a world where everyone belongs. We asked them a few questions; Rosy answers on Rohan’s behalf.
Thank you for joining me, Rosy and Rohan. We recently visited EnAble India, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. To start, how did Rohan feel when we first arrived at the facility?
Rohan was very excited and happy; he thought it was a huge mall!! They were very welcoming.
EnAble India emphasises 'Digital Public Infrastructure' and physical accessibility. Did you notice any specific features—like clear signage, wide pathways, or assistive tools—that made it easier for Rohan to move around independently?"
He used their mobility vehicle and loved it. He could ride it and go around.

"Intellectual disability often involves sensory sensitivities. How did the 'huge' nature of the building affect him? Was it overwhelming, or did the design help him feel secure and guided?"
It was very secure and guided. Rohan enjoyed and sat in the sensory room for some time, which he found relaxing.
Did any particular area, like the training labs or the common zones, stand out as being exceptionally well-designed for people with diverse needs?"
All the rooms were very well designed. The spaces occupied by the visually impaired stood out to me. They were navigating independently, and that was impressive.
We often hear that 'inclusion means business' at EnAble India. How did the staff use the facility to engage Rohan? Did the physical space seem to facilitate better interaction between them?"
He was keeping up with the group and moving with the staff who were explaining and guiding all of us. He was very comfortable.
"If more public buildings in India were designed like this, how would that change your daily life and Rohan’s future opportunities?"
Rohan’s lifestyle will entirely change for the better.
What is one thing from this trip's experience—whether it’s a specific ramp, a tactile path, or just the overall atmosphere—that you wish every parent of a child with an intellectual disability could see?"
They have done everything in the best way possible. Everyone should definitely visit the space to see an inclusive workspace.
